Christian Ministry—Pastoring/Church Planting
Pastoring and/or Bible Teaching
Stefan-Sorin Ilutan is the pastor of Providența Baptist Church in Oradea.
When did you trust Christ?
I come from an Orthodox background. I grew up in a very religious, churchgoing family. I started going to the Baptist church in the city where I grew up after I applied to the Baptist high school for their computer specialization class. My understanding of Christ and His calling was gradual and, after attending a Christian camp, I decided to surrender my life to Jesus. I was the only evangelical Christian in my family, but by God’s grace, two years after my baptism my mother came to Christ during the Easter service. A year later my brother accepted Christ, and a year after that my father and grandparents became Christians.
What have been the defining moments of your Christian walk?
The first and most powerful influence in my Christian life was the pastor of the church I where started going. He discipled me in every spiritual discipline and was alongside me when I shared my calling to the ministry. The years I spent under his supervision really helped me understand and integrate my Christian walk into my daily life. Another important time in my life was when my family started to turn to Christ. I saw God’s immense power and mercy combined with the power of personal testimony. The professors I met at the Baptist Seminary in Bucharest were also an important influence; some of them have been my mentors for more than ten years now.
Why do you want to attend the Forum?
The Forum is a wonderful experience. I have been so blessed through the seminars, the interaction with other leaders, and through the workshops. Not only have I gathered information, but I have established relationships and partnerships with brothers and sisters from across Europe who have the same goal of spreading the gospel in their communities. My church and my community have been blessed by the Forum.
What is your ministry?
I am the pastor of Providența Baptist Church in Oradea, a church of 250 members. My current focus, besides preaching, is on youth ministry and family groups. By practicing and teaching discipleship, the youth group in our church grew from two people when I first became the pastor to 50 currently. The church is situated in a part of the city where there are no other Baptist churches. The population of this area is around 50,000 people, most of them young families who have moved here from the countryside. I am also a theology teacher at the Emanuel Baptist High School in Oradea and a DMin student at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas, United States. ism.
What are your past leadership roles?
I graduated from seminary in 2007 and was elected pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Năsăud (a city in central Romania). I continued studying while pastoring the church. I received my master’s degree in 2010 from Bucharest University. In 2009 I also became pastor of a newly planted church in a different neighborhood of the same city. In 2012 I moved to Oradea, in the western part of Romania, and was elected pastor at Providența Baptist Church.
Why should someone invest in your ministry?
We have a great opportunity as a church to minister to young people and young families who have moved to the area. We are developing new leaders for discipleship, Bible studies, youth ministry, and social outreach.
